Workshop to set Standards for Building Better Museums and Heritage Galleries

Over 50 people from across Bhutan gathered today in Thimphu for a workshop to set guidelines for the Establishment of Museums and Heritage Galleries in Bhutan

Hosted by the Department of Culture and Dzongkha Development (DCDD), the workshop brought together museum staff, artists, architects, and government officials from both public and private organizations.

The opening session highlighted the important role of museums and heritage galleries in preserving Bhutan’s cultural identity, strengthening stewardship of heritage, and supporting the nation’s 21st Century Economic Roadmap and 10X Vision.

It was also presented that museums and galleries also help support the country's bigger goals for modern economic growth and national identity.

Throughout the first day, participants walked through the practical steps needed to start and run a good museum or gallery:

• Clear rules and leadership: How to set up and manage a museum so it runs smoothly and responsibly.

• Finding the right space: What to look for when choosing and designing a building so it is safe and easy to visit.

• Caring for treasures: The right, respectful ways to collect, store, and protect historic objects.

• Smart tech tools: Using a new digital system (IDMMV) to keep track of collections and records online.

• Great storytelling: Designing exhibits that make history come alive through engaging displays and digital tools that everyone can enjoy.

The goal of the workshop is to give Bhutanese teams the practical know-how to build museums and galleries that are welcoming, well-cared-for, and built to last for generations to come.
