Bhutan Elders Community Engagement Program

Honoring Legacy, Celebrating Bhutan's Heritage

As part of the Department of Culture and Dzongkha Development’s initiative to deepen intergenerational ties and foster cultural appreciation, the National Museum of Bhutan was honoured to welcome elderly visitors from February 15th to March 29th, 2025. This special program offered complimentary visits for senior citizens from both the local community and various dzongkhags, with many participants between the ages of 69 and 89.

For some, it was their first time visiting the museum. Guided by dedicated museum assistants who shared stories of Bhutan’s rich artistic, historical, and spiritual past, the experience was enriched through heartfelt conversations and shared stories—moments that allowed personal memories to intertwine with national history.

We were especially honoured to witness these elders—many of whom have lived through pivotal moments in Bhutan’s modern journey—engage with and reflect upon the exhibits. Their appreciation and insights not only validate our efforts in preservation but also inspire us to continue safeguarding Bhutan’s cultural legacy for future generations.

This initiative is a small but meaningful step toward ensuring that our heritage remains a living, breathing part of everyday life—respected by those who came before us and embraced by those who will follow.
